TOKYO, Nov 3 — The Nintendo Switch’s latest exclusive, Super Mario Odyssey, heads into Holiday 2017 as the fastest-selling Super Mario game of all time.
With over 1.1 million US sales in five days, Nintendo is proclaiming Super Mario Odyssey the region’s fastest-selling franchise entry of all time.
Similarly, Nintendo of Europe notes that the cap-throwing, hero-transforming romp surpassed the opening weekend sales of its nearest competitor, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Over two million copies were sold worldwide over the game’s first three days on sale, the European branch observed; five hundred thousand of those purchases took place in Japan.
The critically acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released in 2010, four years into the Nintendo Wii’s lifecycle and at a time when close to 74 million Wii consoles had been shipped to stores, with 28 million of those sent to retailers outside of Japan and the Americas.
By comparison, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 and by the end of September some 7.6 million units had been purchased.
Meanwhile, an avid response from reviewers has ensured that Super Mario Odyssey sits on an average weighted score of 97, according to Metacritic, making it the system’s joint-highest rated title.
Sharing the honour is system launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which was, according to Nintendo’s subsequent financial report, bought more times on Switch than there were existing Switch owners.
With a first-year sales target of 14 million units, the Switch’s first end-of-year Holiday season is of critical importance; achieving the milestone would put it on par with PlayStation 4’s 12-month tally recorded in November 2014.
That would represent a significant improvement over the Switch’s immediate predecessor, the Wii U, which recorded lifetime sales of 13.56 million between November 2012 and the end of 2016.
Before that, the Wii clocked over 20 million sales after 13 months of availability, setting it on its way to surpassing 100 million unit sales. That figure is bettered only by the original PlayStation, Nintendo’s Game Boy and DS lines, and the PlayStation 2.
Strong commercial uptake of the Switch is not only crucial in generating and reinforcing consumer interest in the system, but also critical in convincing third-party developers to support the Switch, whose best-sellers to date are all Nintendo titles: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, 1-2 Switch and Arms. — AFP-Relaxnews
