KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Malaysian squash queen, Datuk Nicol David’s fine run at the Al-Ahram Squash Open Championship has ended.
The world number three player suffered a shocking defeat in the quarterfinals held in the glass court of Great Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, Egypt, late Wednesday (early Thursday Malaysia time).
Nicol who is the second seed, lost 9-11, 11-3, 11-4, 8-11 and 9-11 to Sarah-Jane Perry of England in the match which lasted about 61 minutes.
It was the second major win for the young Englishwoman who knocked out fifth seed, Camille Serme of France in the opening round on Monday.
Sarah-Jane will meet third seed, Raneem El-Welily in the semifinals match, late Thursday after the Egyptian dislodged seventh seed, Amanda Sobhy of the United States, winning 11-9, 4-11, 11-6 and 11-3 in another quarterfinals match.
Malaysia did not send representatives in the men’s division of the tournament which offers a total prize purse of US$100,000 (RM411,650). — Bernama
