Both White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, and husband, Mark Burton, blame Carrey for her death and have filed lawsuits against him. Sweetman’s suit calls the actor “pure evil” and claims he gave White multiple sexually transmitted diseases.

Carrey’s attorneys, Todd Eagan and Martin Singer, say the suits are nothing more than a “shakedown” the two concocted.

“The evidence is irrefutable that White sought out and stole Carrey’s prescription medication from his home and intentionally ingested large quantities for the sole purpose of ending her life, leaving behind detailed suicide notes,” writes Eagan. “There is no basis to impose liability on Carrey for White’s suicide.”

In a motion to stay the proceedings filed yesterday, Carrey’s attorneys paint a picture of a “green card” husband and an estranged mother.

“Together with their unscrupulous attorney who regularly makes statements to the media against Carrey about this action, they seek to cash in on White’s tragic suicide,” Eagan writes. “They are driven by greed. Their outrageous claims are doomed to fail.”

Carrey’s ten-page declaration, also filed Yesterday, says the couple met at a Guns N’ Roses concert in 2012 and fell in love via Skype while he was working in London. He says White asked him to marry her so she could avoid being deported to Ireland, but he wasn’t willing.

“To my surprise, I later learned that in January 2013 Cat married a man in Las Vegas for her green card, while at the same time maintaining her actual relationship with me,” Carrey writes. Later that year, Carrey says, White ly accused him of giving her STDs and it led to the couple’s breakup.

They reunited a year and a half later.

“Normally Cat was very sweet, but when she felt rejected or upset she was prone to making up horrible stories and acting out in vindictive ways,” Carrey writes. “Despite the rocky ending of our first relationship, Cat and I decided to put our breakup behind us and start seeing each other again. What followed was a new relationship, with ten wonderful, loving months together of the most beautiful relationship ever.”

Carrey says his mother was addicted to pain medication his whole life, and allegations that he gave White his pain killers are ridiculous.

White’s two suicide notes are attached as an exhibit. “I knew I was never really for this world,” says one.

Also attached to his declaration are photos of the couple together, email correspondence between Sweetman and Carrey communicated via his publicist, texts with White’s step-mother — and two previous suicide notes from 2012 and 2013 which were never delivered to Carrey.

Carrey’s attorneys want the court to push pause on the case until Sweetman posts a bond US$372,700 (RM1.56 million) to make sure he can recover his litigation costs as the prevailing party, arguing Sweetman’s claims are meritless and she would be unable to establish damages.

Both Sweetman and Burton are represented by Michael Avenatti, who sent The Hollywood Reporter a statement yesterday. “Jim Carrey and his ‘fixer’ lawyers are trying to deceive the media and the public,” writes Avenatti.

“They are attacking a grieving mother and making up facts they know to be untrue in an effort to save Carrey’s career, which was over when he lied about not having STDs ... Carrey is a fraud and when he is forced to testify under oath, the ugly truth will be laid bare.” — The Hollywood Reporter/Bloomberg
