Dakota Fanning will play Merry Levov, a rebellious teenager who begins to express radical political views. In protest of the Vietnam War, she commits an act of political terrorism that kills a bystander, shattering the perfect life of her parents, played by McGregor and Connelly.

“American Pastoral” was published in 1997 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize the following year. Part of Roth’s “American Trilogy,” the novel examines the seemingly perfect life of Seymour Levov, a successful New Jersey businessman referred to as “the Swede” by his former classmate Nathan Zuckerman, the novel’s narrator.

Ewan McGregor will play the Swede, while Jennifer Connelly will portray his wife, a former beauty queen named Dawn. There is no word yet on who might play Nathan Zuckerman, a role that could be limited to a simple voiceover narration or possibly even eliminated in the screenplay by John Romano (“The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Intolerable Cruelty”).

Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce will helm the feature, which is due to enter production in March 2015. — AFP-Relaxnews
