KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) — The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar as the greenback rose broadly against major peers after the release of upbeat US consumer confidence data, currency traders said.
At 5pm, the local unit was quoted at 3.1950/1970 against the greenback compared with 3.1815/1830 at 5 pm yesterday.
The US dollar extended its rally in Asian session after the US economy showed signs of improvement and traders expect it to hold firm on improving US macro outlook ahead of the release of non-farm payrolls tomorrow.
The ringgit eased against other major currencies except the yen.
It fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.5613/5648 from yesterday’s 2.5571/5601 but appreciated against the yen to 3.1080/1111 from 3.1124/1145 yesterday.
The local unit weakened against the British pound to 5.3941/3988 from yesterday’s 5.3863/3891 and declined against the Euro to 4.2784/2821 from yesterday’s 4.2635/2662. — Bernama
