The SUPP president said, after the launching its manifesto today, that his party would appreciate the chance to represent the Chinese community in the Sarawak administration.

“What we want to pre-empt is the unhealthy and dangerous situation if the Barisan Nasional government just comprises the Bumiputras, without the participation of the Chinese community through SUPP,” he said.

“The party is now under a new leadership so give us a chance to prove ourselves by supporting our candidates,” he said, giving his pledge that SUPP members will not disappoint community if elected.

On the SUPP manifesto, Dr Sim said it contained 13 pledges including to safeguard Sarawak's autonomy over immigration, education, taxation, and oil and gas found within the states territories.

The cardiologist said such matters were enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 that even Parliament cannot amend.

He said the party also pledged to establish schemes to enable public participation, encourage checks and balances on important issues and policies, along with designing a mechanism to monitor all its state representatives.

“We will also pledge to uphold a moderate society where  religious freedom and racial harmony are safeguarded and to eradicate all forms of radicalism,” he said,

The Sarawak election will be held on May 7.
