KLANG, Oct 19 — Repair work on the burst Sungai Keramat bund at Batu 5, Jalan Kapar here continues today, said State Disaster Management Committee secretary Col. Ahmad Afandi Mohamad.
He said workmen encountered some difficulties when there was an overflow following a high tide early this morning.
“The DID (Drainage and Irrigation Department) is monitoring the bund and work is still in progress. We hope to have the job completed as soon as possible but we had to wait for the water to recede to proceed with the repairs,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
According to Ahmad Afandi when the high tide came in at about 5am today the bund that they were working on continued to collapse as it could not hold back the water.
Commenting on the high tide situation in the state, Ahmad Afandi said the committee expected the phenomenon to end by this Friday because the sea level had fallen to 5.1 metres compared to 5.7 metres yesterday.
“We observed that the water level was unlike the first (Oct 16) and second days (Oct 17 ) which almost reached 5.7 metres. We hope that the water level will continue to drop and return to normal soon,” he said.
As at 8.30am today the number of evacuees at five relief centres around Selangor had remained at 497.
Of the total, 167 from Kampung Batu 5 are at the Datuk Ahmad Razali Multipurpose Hall in Kapar. — Bernama
