In a press conference today, Rafizi said that the new year period would add to the living cost pressure faced by the people, as the schooling year will soon start.

Prices for RON95 fuel went up by 7 sen yesterday, bringing the petrol price to RM2.31 a litre.

Rafizi said that this was the highest fuel price recorded in the country under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's administration.

“I estimate that based on the average annual usage of 27 billion litres of petrol and diesel, the 20-sen subsidy for these two months will cost RM900 million,” the Pandan MP said.

He said that the subsidy amount can easily be afforded from the extra income that Putrajaya would have garnered due to increasing global crude oil prices.

Putrajaya has removed fuel subsidies and the prices are currently determined by a float system that changes every week according to market conditions.
