KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s express desire for his Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) to join the federal Opposition Pakatan Harapan pact for the elections is a welcome move, PKR said today.

PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the fledgling party’s plans to join Pakatan Harapan would be crucial for the 14th general election — which must be held by next year.

“I am happy and welcome the statement of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s leadership, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who stated PPBM’s wishes and political will to join the big family of Pakatan Harapan,” she was quoted saying in a statement today.

Dr Wan Azizah said she will discuss with the leaders of the Opposition parties in Pakatan Harapan regarding efforts and measures to strengthen the coalition’s political union. Pakatan Harapan is currently composed of the three parties of PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara.

She said she will also invite PPBM’s key leaders to carry out joint discussions on strategies for political union to achieve their goal of “saving” Malaysia.

“I believe PPBM’s joining of Pakatan Harapan soon will strengthen the existing political union. This is very important not just to face the coming general election, but also for the efforts to build a new Malaysia that we dream of together,” she said.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir was reported as saying that PPBM intends to join Pakatan Harapan to form an expanded Opposition coalition with a new identity and which will use a common logo for elections.

Dr Mahathir, a former prime minister currently chairing PPBM, said the party also wants to adopt a common manifesto along with Pakatan Harapan.

“We will inform Pakatan Harapan of our desire to join them with a little adjustment to the name, if it is accepted.

“We agree that besides a new name, we also wish to have a logo and symbol for elections, have one manifesto and only place one candidates to represent this pact (in all constituencies),” he was quoted as saying yesterday by national news agency Bernama.

Last December 13, PPBM and Pakatan Harapan signed an agreement to form an electoral pact to face ruling Barisan Nasional coalition in the 14th general election.

Dr Wan Azizah had then said that Pakatan Harapan’s agreement for an electoral pact with PPBM is just an initial step, adding that a formal Opposition coalition will be formed before the 14th general election.
