GEORGE TOWN, May 20 — Penang Gerakan Youth today questioned the state government over what it alleged as the lease of a piece of land in Lebuh Raya Peel here for the expansion of a private hospital without going through open tender.
Its acting chief, Jason Loo, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had provided an unsubstantiated reply by stating that the lease of the land was for a high-value investment and, as such, could be directly negotiated.
“Is the expansion of a private hospital of higher value than the proposed construction of the undersea tunnel for which the open tender process was used?
“I am not sure whether this project is necessary for the people of Penang because there is also a proposal to build a private hospital, complete with hotel facilities and a multi-level car park, in Taman Manggis,” he said to reporters here.
The DAP-led Penang government had defended its directly negotiated RM156 million land lease for the expansion of a private hospital. — Bernama
