KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — Several DAP lawmakers today announced a RM 10,000 cash reward for any individual with information leading to the arrest of individuals who sent death threats to present and former leaders of electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, Ipoh Timur MP Thomas Su, Lanang MP Alice Lau and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun announced the bounty today during a press conference at the Parliament lobby, saying that the money came from a group of "concerned citizens".
Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, committee member Mandeep Singh, and former chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan all received death threats yesterday, and lodged police reports over the matter.
The death threats included images manipulated to depict them as being decapitated, in the manner of beheadings by the Islamic State terrorist group.
"We will offer the reward for anyone, including the police, who can help with information that leads to the arrest of the people behind these messages and threats," Lim said.
The MPs said that they are making the offer out of concern for the safety of the Bersih leaders.
Bersih 2.0 will organise the Bersih 5 rally on November 19, and has come under pressure from the “Red Shirts” movement led by Umno's Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos.
