KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 ― One of KL’s most popular ice cream shops, Inside Scoop, is opening their latest outlet in Sri Petaling today. What’s unusual about this outlet ― their seventh ― is that it shares the same space with Three Little Birds Coffee.
Inside Scoop founder Edmund Tan says, “This marks our first collaboration with another F&B business. We love ice cream and we love coffee too, but to do coffee would be to take our focus away from what we do best, which is ice cream. Three Little Birds is one of the leading coffee roasters and purveyors in Malaysia today so it made sense to work with them.”
Three Little Birds head honcho Joey Mah shares, “Partnering with Inside Scoop was spontaneous. We actually discussed it as early as a year ago but I felt the market wasn’t right then. Now we are at maximum capacity in terms of roasting, which means the quality of coffee going out is better than ever. It also means we can choose the partners to work with.”
Mah himself is a huge fan of Inside Scoop’s offerings. Fan favourites include the Valrhona chocolate, D24 durian, XO cranberry and all-natural pistachio. According to Tan, he and his partner Shiew Li employ gelato techniques to create full-bodied and flavourful ice creams.
“Ice cream and coffee go really well together as both are sensory experiences,” says Tan. “This collaboration is in its early days though, so give us time to evolve. We definitely won’t rule out creating a single origin coffee ice cream together, for example.”
For now, fans can look forward to tasting specialty affogatos at this Sri Petaling outpost. Mah says, “We’ll pair specific ice cream flavours with specific coffees. This is something we had wanted to do for a long time now. We will also be serving a range of single origins for both filter and espresso coffees.”
Given the increasingly competitive market ― there are at least three or four other local independent ice cream producers ― Tan believes Inside Scoop’s advantage is being entirely artisanal. “Compared to other artisanal ice cream producers, we control the whole process of making our ice cream. For example, even the cookie dough used in our ice cream is made from scratch in our kitchen.”
Besides coffee, Three Little Birds will be offering hot chocolate made with Seniman Kakao’s 80 per cent cocoa chocolate from Lam Dong, Vietnam. Mild-tasting and velvety-smooth, this is perfect for those who dislike overly-sweet chocolate beverages.
Sri Petaling was chosen for this collaboration partly due to the fact it would be a different market from the usual Bangsar and Hartamas scene. Mah says, “We love Sri Petaling and always wanted to reach our customers around this area. Neighbourhood cafés are great and this will cater to the coffee- and ice cream-loving residents in the neighbourhood.”
Though Inside Scoop offers coffee at two of their other outlets, Sri Petaling will be the first one serving specialty coffee. Tan says, “To be honest, we don’t think we’ve done coffee that well in the past. Yet coffee goes so well with our buttermilk waffles too, not just ice cream. Here, thanks to Three Little Birds, our customers can get the best of both worlds.”
Mah adds, “You can’t expect good coffee without well-trained baristas. None of us can be good at everything. Which is why collaborations make sense. We want to support local start-ups and it’s important to have good people and good businesses working together to build a community.”
For their grand opening today, Inside Scoop Sri Petaling will be giving out free scoops to customers starting from 7pm while stocks last
