SINGAPORE, Nov 8 — Reigning ONE Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee escaped serious injuries after her car flipped over five times in a car accident yesterday morning in Hawaii.
ONE Championship chief executive Chatri Sityodtong said in a Facebook post today that the 21-year-old had fallen asleep at the wheel while driving to her gym for a morning training session.
The Honolulu Star reported that Lee lives in Mililani, Hawaii and was driving to her parents’ gym in Waipio, a journey that is slightly over 6km.
“Miraculously, she survived with only a concussion, some minor burns, and a banged-up body,” said Sityodtong.
According to Sityodtong, Lee’s car had flipped over “five to six times according to the police”, as he added: “I saw photos of the damaged car, and it was a complete wreck.
“If she was not wearing a seatbelt, it would have most certainly been a different story. We are all blessed and relieved that Angela will make a full recovery.”
Lee has also been ruled out of her title fight against Mei Yamaguchi on November 24, Sityodtong confirmed today. The rising young star’s rematch against the Japanese fighter was expected to headline the ONE: Immortal Pursuit event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium this month.
Lee, who holds the ONE Championship women’s atomweight belt, was aiming to extend her 8-0 perfect record with a victory in Singapore.
Taking to Instagram to express his relief, fellow One Championship fighter and fiancé Bruno Pucci wrote: “You are proving everyone how strong you are, you are unstoppable! I’m so grateful I can see you smile and tell you how much I love you.”
The 27-year-old Brazilian and Lee have been in a relationship since January and announced to fans in early October that they were engaged. They have yet to set a date for their wedding. — TODAY
