SINGAPORE, Sept 22 ― Mixed martial arts (MMA) organisations from Singapore and Indonesia joined forces to launch a new Southeast Asian fight series today, underscoring the sport’s growing popularity.
The Singapore Fighting Championship (SFC) has partnered with Indonesia’s One Pride to organise events in both countries, they said in a joint statement.
MMA has grown from a niche sideshow to one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
Asia’s largest MMA promoter ONE Championship is based in Singapore.
ONE Championship founder and chairman Chatri Sityodtong welcomed the formation of more MMA events in the region.
“That’s actually great for the ecosystem because you know a lot of times their best athletes end up graduating to the ONE Championship platform so I don’t view the world as competitor or not competitor,” he told reporters during an Asian MMA industry conference in Singapore.
“For me it’s about the ecosystem and growing the sport as a whole.” ― AFP
