KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 ― Olympian Gavin Kyle Green continues his fine strokes to win the SapuraKencana National Classic Golf Tournament with four under par 212, on the final day at the TPC Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Kiara, here today.
Through the win, Gavin had also earned his ticket to feature in his first ever PGA Tour, the prestigious CIMB Classic from Oct 20-23, besides the RM22,000 cash prize by winning the playoff after having tied with defending champion, Ben Leong in the three-day tournament.
With two berths allocated for Malaysians in the CIMB Classic, another golfer will be selected based on the world ranking on Oct 11.
Gavin, who shared the lead with Ben and Khor Kheng Hwai with three under par 141 after the second round yesterday, started strong today after carding birdies in the third, fifth and 10th holes, but slipped points after carding bogeys in the 13th, 15th and 16th hole.
The 22-year-old then managed to level the score with Leong by carding a birdie in the 17th hole, helped by Leong’s mistake to card a bogey in the fourth hole and double bogey in the 13th hole at the RM150,000 event.
Leong walked away with RM14,500 prize money, while Khor settled in third place with three under par 213, followed by Low Khai Jei in fourth on 219.
Gavin said he did not expect experienced Leong would miss the path in the last and 18th hole, which gave him the chance to win the tournament through playoff.
“I know I had a second chance when I made the birdie in the 17th hole... I missed so many birdies earlier but am thankful to have made that one. That birdie was huge for me to win this tournament.
“I am happy with my performance for the entire three days and playing in PGA will be a huge transformation in my career,” he told reporters after the prize giving ceremony here, today. ― Bernama
