LOS ANGELES, Sept 22 — Idris Elba is to reprise his role as Stephen King’s roaming gunslinger Roland Deschain in a 2018 TV series follow up to 2017 feature film The Dark Tower.
Elba will return, as will Tom Taylor, in a prequel series that acts as the origin story for legendary Stephen King creation Roland Deschain.
The series is to focus on stories from The Gunslinger (1982) and Wizard and Glass (1997), in contrast to the movie which is expected to depart from its source material in some aspects.
Another actor will be cast to play a younger version of Deschain, and while Matthew McConaughey’s continued involvement is not yet confirmed (though his character, Walter, is likely to appear in one form or another), film director Nikolaj Arcel and are staying on in varying capacities.
A 2018 broadcast for The Dark Tower series on TV is intended to line up with the availability of its feature film counterpart on cable and streaming services.
Though a distributor is yet to be attached, the timing coincides with an anticipated gap in programming generated by the end of Game of Thrones in 2017.
MRC and Sony Pictures chose to announce the news (via Entertainment Weekly) on Stephen King's 69th birthday.
As a feature film, The Dark Tower is expected to make its theatrical debut the week of February 17, 2017. — AFP-Relaxnews
