LOS ANGELES, March 8 — After Chi-Raq was backed by Amazon Studios, Spike Lee’s next project, Rodney King, will be distributed by Netflix from April 28, 2017.
The one-man play stars frequent Spike Lee collaborator Roger Guenveur Smith (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Chi-Raq) who both created Rodney King and has performed it live over the last four years, including the August 12 show that Lee recorded for Netflix.
Rodney King, whose beating at the hands of four police officers inspired the Los Angeles riots of 1992, was also instrumental in helping to calm the disturbances through a televised interview, as Variety reports.
He died in 2012 and Smith found himself compelled to explore King’s life and circumstances.
