TOKYO, Sept 29 — Sorry ladies; Japanese actor-singer Masaharu Fukuyama is officially off the market.
Long considered one of the most eligible bachelors in Japan, Fukuyama married Japanese actress Kazue Fukiishi yesterday, the Japan Times reported today.
The happy occasion coincided with Fukiishi’s 33rd birthday.
The 46-year-old actor announced the news in a statement to the media.
“I gradually feel we have become able to assist and support each other’s life,” he said.
“I’m hoping we will receive support from our fans and staff to create a happy family.”
Fukisshi later released a statement of her own, which read: “I want to build a loving family filled with smiles.”
The Straits Times added that the couple met in 2001, when Fukiishi, then 18, was graduating from high school.
Photography buff Fukuyama had been invited by a magazine to take pictures of her for a commemorative graduation pictorial.
Their paths crossed again in 2010 at a friend’s party.
Fukuyama played the lead role in Hirokazu Koreeda’s “Like Father, Like Son” in 2013, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival.
He is also one of Japan’s top-selling male artists, with sales of 23 million copies of records. One of his best-known songs is “Sakura Zaka.”
Fukiishi joined the entertainment world when she was 13. She has been in numerous films and TV dramas including “Noriko’s Dinner Table” directed by Sion Sono.
