A Washington Post journalist spotted the Time cover during a visit to one of the clubs and, after investigating, reported that it was a fake, and was framed on the walls of at least four other venues.

“TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS . . . EVEN TV!” screams the headline of the cover dated March 1, 2009, with a subhead reading: “Donald Trump: The 'Apprentice' is a television smash!”

According to a spokeswoman for the US magazine, Time has asked the Trump Organisation, currently run by the president's adult sons, to take down the covers.

The Republican president has been at loggerheads with much of the US media since last year's campaign, accusing them of peddling “fake news” about him. — AFP
