Vietnamese fishermen jailed, fined for encroaching into Malaysian waters

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 10 — Nine Vietnamese fishermen were sentenced to six months' jail each by the Sessions Court here today after they pleaded guilty to illegally entering and fishing in Malaysian waters last August.

Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, who ordered them to serve the sentence from the date of arrest, also imposed a fine of RM20,000 on skipper Phang Hong Dai, 40 and RM5,000 each on the eight crew members.

The eight were Van Thia, 38; Phan Thanhliu, 30; Hyliyn Bien Hoang, 43; Tran Kim Tiew, 33; Le Thanh, 38; Vo Ngoc Ly, 60; Phan Nhat Nam, 25; and Phan Van Co, 19.

The offence under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Fisheries Act 1985 was committed at about 36 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Kalutan off northern Kudat on Aug 26.
