SEBERANG PERAI, Nov 6 — Hundreds of students in Penang crossed through flood waters this morning to sit for their Form Five SPM examination.

As expected, there were some hiccups and quick fixes as students attempted to make their way to the examination halls.

In Sungai Dua here, around 150 SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad students crowded into lorries and four wheel drives to cross the metre-high water.

It was a surreal scene as almost the entire school was submerged under waist-deep water.

A school staff member, who refused to be identified, said floods had hit the school before, but not with this ferocity.

With the school’s examination hall located on the second floor, the students, invigilators, and teachers crossed a rudimentary “bridge” made of tables to reach the school’s staircase.

Student Mohamad Hakimi Mohd Syed, 17, described the situation as surreal and difficult.

“My family lives in Taman Seri Murni (roughly 850 metres from the school) and our home was also hit by the floods.

“It was impossible to study fully for today’s Bahasa Malaysia and Pendidikan Seni papers — the house was submerged!”

Wan Nur Farahin Wan Sabri, 17,echoed her schoolmate’s statements, saying that she was just hoping for the best.

“It was so difficult to concentrate. I just memorised as much of the subject as I could,” she said.

“Now I have to just hope and pray for the best.”

Her friend Nurlisa Amirah Ahmad Nizar, 17, kept a positive attitude in the face of difficulty.

“It was a strange experience today. We were ferried to school in a lorry and saw the school submerged in waist-deep water.

“All we can do is try our best. Honestly, the trip to the exam hall would have been fun if there were no exams,” she said with a smile.
