KOTA BARU, April 25 — Security control is being stepped up at the Malaysia-Thailand border in Kelantan following the drop in water levels in Sungai Golok at Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah and Jeli.

Kelantan National Security Council (MKN) secretary, Azhar Mohamad Yusof said a shallow Sungai Golok would ease smuggling activities in these areas.

“So far, 16 officers and 530 members of the Border Regiment’s 5th Battalion have been deployed to the Malaysia-Thailand border area in the state.

“Patrols are being conducted in Lubok Setol, Nibong, around Rantau Panjang town in Pasir Mas, Bukit Bunga in Tanah Merah and Air Lanas di Jeli,” he told Bernama, here, today.

Azhar said enforcement agencies such as the police, Immigration Department, Customs Department, Kelantan Domestic Trade, Coooperatives and Consumerism Office, and the Border Security Agency were involved in the integrated operation along the border area.

“The operation is aimed at preventing smuggling and cross-border crime from spreading due to the effects of the El Nino phenomenon currently.

“Members of the local community are also urged to report on any suspicious activity in their area in order to curb such activity,” he added. — Bernama
