The former minister made the call while winding up the wing's annual general assembly, where delegates repeatedly pressed the government to confer its members contracts, posts and allocations.

“I want more women as directors and board members in our GLCs,” she said in her winding up speech.

“Like MARA, there are hundreds of companies under it. I want women to be made the directors, not just deputy directors. We have shown we can lead,” she added.

Shahrizat said empowering women is the hallmark of her leadership as Umno Wanita chief, which is why she was pushing for more women to be appointed in state-owned enterprises.

She said she would continue do so as Iong as she is Umno Wanita chief.

“If you want to talk about legacy… I was the one that worked towards making women leadership a mainstream,” she said.

Shahrizat helmed the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry from 2009 to April 2012. She resigned after her husband was implicated in the National Feedlot Corporation scandal.

The controversy, however, did not affect her position as Wanita chief despite several attempts by her political rivals to unseat her.

She had held the post since 2001.

Today Shahrizat reminded the Umno leadership that it had the duty to promote more women leaders as recognition of the wing's services.

“Remember who worked hard to ensure you become a YB,” she said.

Umno Wanita is traditionally considered to be the ruling Malay party's backbone and is often at the frontlines during elections.

Prime Minister and party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak had during a closed door presidential briefing yesterday indicated that he could be calling for the general election soon.

Shahrizat in addressing her members today said the wing will unite behind their president and double efforts to campaign for Umno victory.
