KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan expressed confidence that Sabahans will reject seasonal political parties, after former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced he would be leading a new party.
Malay language daily Berita Harian reported Abdul Rahman, who is also BN strategic communications director and minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, as saying that Sabah BN will be monitoring to see whether the statements made by these leaders are different from the stands that they took while serving under BN.
“If their statements are vastly different, surely the people of Sabah have the right to question the integrity, consistency and principles of the leaders involved, which keep changing. We will wait and watch for new developments,” he was quoted as telling the daily.
He added that Sabah BN will continue to fight for the needs of the people of the state.
Shafie yesterday announced plans to take over an existing Sabah party and to transform it into a multi-racial organisation.
Shafie had turned down former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s offer to be the deputy president of the new Bumiputera-based Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, in order to lead his own party in Sabah and to lead a local cause.
