KOTA KINABALU, Feb 12 — The Sabah Wildlife Department said today it did not support or co-organise so-called wildlife theme runs organised by a local company here.
Its director, William Baya, said: “As far as I am concerned, these runs are not charity runs and in no way have any funds been channelled to the Sabah Wildlife Department for conservation purposes from some of the recent wildlife runs, namely the elephant, rhino and the up-and-coming sun bear run” he said in a statement.
Baya responded to a recent press release by the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) that a sun bear run scheduled for Feb 28 in Tanjung Aru was not in benefit of sun bears or the centre.
He said the company organising these runs was free to use the names of wildlife species as long as it did not give the misleading impression that funds collected from the public were actually helping his department to protect the wildlife.
“It has come to my attention that many of those who did register for these runs did so thinking that a large portion of the fees are actually being ploughed back into conservation, which is not really the case,” he said. — Bernama
