KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — The government has allocated RM402 million to the Election Commission (EC) for the 14th general election, a minister said today.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said however said that the Commission will request for extra funding from the Finance Ministry "should there be unexpected matters".
"For your information, the funding to execute the 13th general election was RM460 million. Whereas the funding given to the Election Commission for the 14th general election in 2018, is RM320 million,” Azalina said in a written reply to DAP's Sarikei MP Wong Ling Biu.
"Additionally, the EC was also given RM82 million in 2017, for early preparation. The total allocation requested for the 14th general election from the Finance Ministry is RM450 million.”
Wong had asked the prime minister to state the funds allocated for the EC for the upcoming 14th general election and how much was used in the 13th general election held in 2013.
Last week, Bernama reported deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as indicating that GE14 will be held next year, putting to rest heightened speculation that the national polls might be called this year.
Giving the hint when opening Gerakan’s 46th National Delegates Conference at Menara PGRM, Ahmad Zahid told the party to get their election machinery ready to face the impending general election.
