IPOH, Dec 2 — Muslims held peaceful demonstrations here and in Kuala Kangsar today to protest the oppression of the Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar.

About 200 of them gathered in the compound of the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque, the Perak State Mosque, here after Friday prayers.  They comprised representatives of various NGOs and several members of the Rohingya community in Malaysia.

In Kuala Kangsar, about 100 Muslims representing 12 NGOs staged a protest in front of the Ridzwaniah Mosque.

In Alor Setar, a group of Rohingya Muslims expressed the desire to return to Myanmar to champion their rights and fight the oppression.

Yusof Ali, chairman of the Kedah branch of the Rohingya Association of Malaysia, said they wanted to go to the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh first and discuss the best way to help their fellow countrymen in Myanmar.  “Right now about 300 members of the association have expressed their desire to help,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

The international media has reported about atrocities against the Rohingya community in Myanmar that have forced many to flee the country to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Yusof also expressed concern that contact was lost on Nov 21 with about 500 Rohingya refugees, among them women and children, who fled Myanmar in 25 boats on Nov 17 for their safety in the waters close to Myanmar and Bangladesh. — Bernama
