Ismawi, who owns a Facebook account under the name AsmaelzHadzeny and AsmaelzHadzenyII, has issued a statement where he apologised for his actions to the general public.

“In issuing the statement, police investigations revealed that he gained no support at all from his Facebook friends or followers instead he was condemned and criticised for making such calls," the Star Online quotted Gani as saying.

“It is further noted that he did not pursue to defend himself and in fact relented once he received negative responses from his followers.

“Having considered all factors surrounding this case, though the Attorney-General viewed seriously of the offence committed, the Attorney-General has decided not to prefer any charge against Ismawi.”

Ismawi was arrested last Saturday and was detained for ten days by the police for inciting his Facebook followers to overthrow the government.

City police abruptly ended the New Year’s Eve countdown at Dataran Merdeka to prevent protesters from causing chaos, according to the Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh.

The protesters comprised of mostly university students who were rallying against the rising cost of living near Dataran Merdeka. The crowd managed to break through several lines of police and DBKL barricades at 11pm on New Year’s Eve. 30 minutes later, the state-organised concert was abruptly halted.

Police estimated that 5,000 participants attended the rally, instead of the 50,00 figure given by the organiser Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup.
