ALOR SETAR, Oct 19 — Persatuan Pengukuhan Perpaduan Rakyat Pulau Pinang today challenged the organisers of Bersih 5.0 to hold an open debate session to give a clearer explanation to the people.
The explanation would give a clear picture to the people on whether the rally was beneficial and could bring the country forward, or vice versa.
The association’s adviser, who is also state MCA deputy chairman, Datuk Leong Yong Kong said the debate session was the best way to inform the people about the key issues raised at the Bersih 5.0 rally.
“We’ll see, this gathering will not lead to the country’s progress, however, if it continues, there will be clashes over differences brought about by their respective belief.
“I hope the organisers accept the challenge to debate and they can choose the place, date, time, as well as those who would be debating. From the association, I will be debating along with chairman Peter Chew,” he told reporters at Wisma Darul Aman today.
Leong said if it was agreed upon, the association hoped the debate could be in Chinese, as they want to focus more on the Chinese community who are seen to be the most actively involved in the rally.
“If we can debate in Chinese it would be better because we want the Chinese community to be aware of the disadvantages of this assembly, but even if it’s in Bahasa Melayu or any other language, we will agree to it,” he said.
Leong added that support for Bersih 5.0 was not as great as those in previous rallies, as people now were more aware of its agenda.
“We do not want the organisers (of Bersih 5.0) to continue to deceive the people, so let us unite and not endorse or participate in this rally,” he said.
