KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — The Malays in Umno are not prone to forgetfulness, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today in an apparent swipe at Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s favoured catchphrase of “Melayu mudah lupa” or “Malays easily forget”.

The Umno president and prime minister said the Malays in Umno always remember its contributions to the community and do not readily betray the party.

“I want to ask, who is the Malay who easily forgets? Definitely not us,” he said in his address to delegates at the Umno general assembly today.

He also said that he will not resort to personal attacks against his rivals, but will instead be critical in a “polite” way.

He also said that it is a “sin” for former leaders to betray a struggle after taking an oath for the position and to protect secrets.

“I have asked religious scholars, when an oath is made on the name of Allah and later broken, what is the consequences,” he said.

“They have said it is a big sin,” he added.

Yesterday, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also mocked Dr Mahathir for his catchphrase, saying the wing would always remember Dr Mahathir’s deeds but will fight to the end his betrayal.
