TAPAH, Jan 19 — A 22-year old lorry driver has been charged at the Magistrate’s Court here with causing the deaths of nine people due to reckless driving.
Muhammad Eizat Hazmi is accused of driving recklessly, causing the deaths of a van driver and his eight passengers in a road accident on October 28, last year.
The accident took place at 6.45am along KM45 of the Ipoh-Teluk Intan road.
For this, Muhammad Eizat was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
If convicted, he could face a mandatory jail term between two and ten years, as well as a fine between RM 5,000 and RM 20,000.
Muhammad Eizat claimed trial to the charge, maintaining a calm demeanour throughout proceedings.
Muhammad Eizat's lawyer Ranjit Singh asked Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazian for a bail of RM5,000, citing his client’s young age and salary.
“The accused is still young, unmarried and earns only RM1,000 per month,” Ranjit told the court.
“His father is also here in court and will ensure that the accused is present for any court dates.”
Taking everything into consideration, Mohd Harith set Muhammad Eizat's bail at RM6,000 with one surety.
He also set February 27 for remention of the case.
Deputy public prosecutor Fatin Farahiyah Nadzri appeared for the prosecution.
According to previous reports, the accident resulted in the death of the male van driver and eight women who were farm workers.
All nine victims perished at the scene of the accident.
Muhammad Eizat was also injured in the accident, and received treatment at Ipoh's Raja Permaisuri Bainun hospital.
