JOHOR BARU, 30 Nov — The rash action of an Indonesian man who swam out to sea to escape from enforcement officers nearly cost his life when he was stranded for nine hours before being rescued here early yesterday.
Tanjung Sedili Maritime District Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director (Operations) Commander Mohammad Othman said the Indonesian known as Hanafi, 45, was rescued by the crew of the commercial ship, FPSO Perisai Kameli, about 2.4 nautical miles east off Tanjung Punggai, Kota Tinggi, at 7.30am, before an MMEA patrol was dispatched to provide assistance to the victim.
“The victim was sent to the clinic for treatment before being referred to the DM 7 Maritime Office for further investigation,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Mohammad said initial investigation revealed that the victim had attempted to return to his country via an illegal route. — Bernama
