LONDON, Nov 30 — Stephen Hawking warned on Monday that obesity is “one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.”

His message was part of an ad campaign launched to promote the work of the Swedish non-profit company GEN-PEP.

Calling it “the most serious public health problem of the 21st century,” the renowned physicist said, “Humanity faces a major challenge, and millions of lives are in danger.”

He added that “it’s not rocket science” that people should eat less and get off their butts more.

Most sobering is the fact that this comes from the perspective of a man prematurely committed to an immobile life.

“For what it’s worth, how being sedentary has been a major health problem is beyond my understanding,” he said.

The ad ends with three sobering reminders: “Physical inactivity is now the world’s fourth leading cause of death,” “Required physical activity per day: Adults 30 minutes,” and “Required physical activity per day: Children 60 minutes.”
