According to The Sun, illustrator Johanna Basford was picking up an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to art and entrepreneurship at Buckingham Palace yesterday, when Prince William told her his wife is a bone fide member of the colouring community.

The 33-year-old Basford told reporters: “Prince William actually said that his wife likes to colour in the Secret Garden, which was really sweet.”

Perhaps he was being polite and making small talk — who knows?

But what is certain is adult colouring books, or “colour therapy”, are a runaway hit with Basford’s first book Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book selling more than a million copies. It has been translated into 14 languages including Malay.

When asked to comment on the newfound popularity of this childhood hobby, she replied: “I think people are just craving a digital detox.”
