KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Let’s face it, it’s not easy to eat healthy and have an active lifestyle at the same time. Especially if you are working full-time, have a family to take care of, household chores to finish.
Don’t worry, Elyn Pow of Rawsome is here to help... whether it is your diet or work-out regime.
The working mother turned entrepreneur started selling chia seed puddings two years ago from home.
Last August, she opened Rawsome HQ in Taman Tun Dr Ismail where you can dine on healthy meals, desserts and drinks. It also houses a yoga studio, event space and retail shop.
“I did the chia seed puddings because I have a sweet tooth and my family has a diabetic history. I’m very careful with my ingredients as I believe that sugar is the culprit. I don’t even use brown sugar or cane sugar. I use the Big Tree Farms Organic Coconut Sugar that is low GI because I eat it every day. Even if I sweat so much, my sugar level is borderline because it’s genetics,” said Pow.
The mother of two attributes her youthful looks to her active lifestyle and philosophy, “Healthy eating is part of a healthy lifestyle. You cannot just eat healthy and not work out or work out and don’t eat healthy,” she added. Whatever you see served at Rawsome HQ is what Pow eats on a daily basis.
As a homegrown brand, Pow also believes in supporting other local businesses. For her puddings, she uses organic chia seeds sourced from Seremban-based Spoon Health.
The granola is by The Kettlebowl and cacao nibs from Vie Verte. As Pow believes in promoting an active lifestyle, each chia seed pudding costs a reasonable RM13.90.
What drives Pow’s passion is how she is helping change people’s lifestyles. Most of her customers are women in their thirties. “They probably have a family and a stable source of income already. They know what is life and want to live longer to see their kids. Now they have time to invest in their own lives.”
When Pow introduces them to something new like spinning classes, the women say they feel alive and energised. Pow also achieved success with a group of working women who didn’t have time to work out. She introduced them to chia seed puddings as a meal replacement and some of them lost 2.2 kilogrammes within a week!
At Rawsome, the chia seed puddings are delivered fresh to you. This ensures you can store them refrigerated for up to five days. If you dine at Rawsome HQ, it is made upon order.
Pow says that most of their customers still prefer delivery and the bulk of their income is from deliveries.
You will be spoiled for choice with the different variations of chia seed puddings here. There are so many combinations that even Pow can’t keep track!
You have various ranges that utilise yoghurt, milk, kombucha jelly and even soy milk for the lactose-intolerant. There is also a range with digestive biscuit bits that is great for meal replacements.
Depending on your preference, you can swap some of the combinations. A popular flavour with children is a Milo Nutella combination called Mutella. There are also some off-menu choices like Chocolate Banana and Peanut Butter.
Pow also makes chia seed cakes that are great for a guilt-free celebration. You have a choice of Mutella or Strawberry Mango. These cakes require three days pre-order.
After making chia seed puddings for months, Pow thought that it would be a good idea to move on to vegetarian-based bowls, which they started four to five months ago.
They started with the Buddha Bowl which Pow usually eats at home. She doesn’t get bored with the selection as there’s a choice of five different sauces: vinegar garlic, spicy Asian, roasted sesame, peanut and sweet and spicy.
There is also Vegetarian Nasi Lemak, Quinoa Ulam and Cauliflower Quinoa “Fried Rice” — all at RM18 each.
“We chose to go vegetarian as most (about 80 per cent) of our customers are Malay. I didn’t want them to feel insecure when they order from me. For example, if I put chicken in they will ask if it’s halal or not. Since I don’t want to create confusion, vegetarian it is,” said Pow.
As Pow keeps her kitchen meat-free, they use soy-based mock meat for the “curry chicken” in their Vegetarian Nasi Lemak.
Currently the Vegetarian Nasi Lemak is their bestseller since it appeals to all Malaysians. Instead of using rice cooked with coconut milk, it is replaced with quinoa and brown rice cooked with extra virgin coconut oil.
The “santan” is replaced with low-fat milk and their oil-free sambal is made from mushrooms, dried chillies and chia seeds. If you prefer, you also have the option to swap out the quinoa and brown rice for soba noodles.
This also applies for the Quinoa Ulam. By end of this month, fans can look forward to the soon-to-released Teriyaki Soba.
As only a small batch is prepared every day, Pow’s advice is to pre-book your meal here to avoid dissapointments. You can also have cold pressed juice and kombucha with your meals.
When it came to utilising the space at Rawsome HQ efficiently, it made sense to include a yoga studio. From the early days, Rawsome has always been associated with yoga.
When Pow was trying to get the word out for her chia seed pudding, she attended bazaars and colloborated with yoga instructors and yoga studios. “We let them try as that is how we try to introduce the product because people didn’t know what a chia seed pudding was at that time,” said Pow.
Yoga classes are held on weekends for just RM20! Pow believes with this kind of pricing it’ll encourage people to pursue yoga.
This includes aerial yoga: there are 10 spots available for each session. As the spaces are limited, it is recommended you call to book a spot for the aerial yoga.
The first floor space also has a retail area that stocks local and international wellness brands. It is also an event space for people to host workshops. On some weekends, there may be brands promoting essential oils or people holding raw cooking classes.
As part of a community service, Pow and her yoga instructor Lay Gaik introduced #rawsomegivesback to promote a healthy lifestyle. Held in February last year, it received overwhelming response when they called for 50 participants to join them for one hour of yoga.
“At that time, Rawsome was so new... nobody knew who we were. But we were really lucky Lululemon was our main sponsor at that time and also Panasonic,” explained Pow.
The event was held at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre where Panasonic also launched their breadmaker and slow juicer. Lululemon also flew in 50 new yoga mats from Hong Kong that were personalised with the participant’s names!
Seeing the good response from the event, Pow decided to have an annual event and also small ones every two months. In May, Pow organised the second #rawsomegivesback at T6 @ Light Grey in Sungai Buloh where the turnout was also very good.
“If you see my Instagram #rawsomegivesback, it is a community event where you don’t need to pay. You just come and give me one hour. I will give you a workout and right after the workout I’ll feed you with my food just to encourage you. You do this and you will feel different. Moreover you have got nothing to lose but everything to gain.”
