GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 — Ready or not, the enfant terrible of KL’s bean scene is heading to Penang! Outspoken Joey Mah of Artisan Roast and Three Little Birds, who has been likened by some to the Gordon Ramsay of Malaysian specialty coffee (both for his talent and his bold proclamations), will be invading the George Town Festival this weekend with his brand of irreverent coffee philosophy.
As part of the MMOxGTF collaboration, Mah’s Nowhereman Coffee pop-up café (a standalone venture supported by Artisan Roastery) will be running at ChinaHouse from August 28 to 30. Along for the ride is Jason Loo, two-time Malaysian Barista Champion and head barista at The Red Beanbag, and Grant Rattray, who heads Mercanta Asia, an international green coffee bean supplier.
“This is the first time we are going to Penang. We had heard a lot about Penang’s coffee drinkers and how they demand a certain character and taste in their coffee,” says Mah.
Besides getting their caffeine fix, coffee geeks can join various events organised by Mah. These include cupping sessions (one with Rattray and another with Tow Jin of Roast Things), an Aeropress workshop with Joachim Leong of Spacebar Coffee, as well as classes with Mah and Loo.
Rattray’s cupping session will interest those in or entering the specialty coffee industry; he had recently spent two and a half years as Director at the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, a not-for-profit organisation responsible for the Cup of Excellence programme.
The classes will cover the gamut of coffee knowledge, espresso and brewing. Loo will share tips on barista competitions and his World Barista Championship experience. In his brewing classes, Mah will cover the basics of brewing drip and immersion coffee; understanding ratio, grind size and brew time; brewing techniques; and other areas of the specialty coffee and barista world.
“By having a strong line-up, we hope we can share our understanding and love for coffee,” says Mah. “With the support of Narelle McMurtrie of China House and through this pop-up, we hope to help those who are new to specialty coffee appreciate it better.”
What else can coffee aficionados expect this weekend? Mah reveals that they will be recreating the popular Nowhereman Coffee “cough syrup” blend using three types of beans instead of two.
He says, “The new offering will be a blend of Kenya Muwa AA, Ethiopia Wondo and Indonesia Wahana Estate Rasuna Washed. Both espresso and filter coffee will be served.”
Ever a coffee purist who believes in enjoying the flavours of the beans on their own merits, he adds, “Bring your own sugar!”
