The manufacturer describes the Viziv as a sports sedan drawing inspiration from the race and rally heritage of the Legacy, the Impreza and the WRX.

Although no anticipated performance figures have been released thus far, there's no hybrid electric trickery going on under the hood as it's powered by Subaru's legendary boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

Although the Viziv name may be familiar, this concept is completely new.

The name has been used by the Japanese automaker for a number of previous show concepts, although they tended to be a little more fanciful and less realistic production propositions than this one.

Viziv is a portmanteau, an invented word created from two existing words. In this case it's a contraction of "vision for innovation".

A previous concept to carry the moniker was a three-row SUV crossover, which eventually turned up in quite revised form in the US market as what we now know as the Ascent.

So, is this Viziv Concept the next-generation WRX?

Well, Subaru's design department's product planning division manager, Mamoru Ishii, somewhat cryptically said of the car, "We utilize traditional Subaru shapes like the flared fenders and the hood scoop. But we wanted to enhance the three-dimensional sculptural forms, to express more of the shadows."

He then conceded, "It's a design study for a sport sedan, and WRX is one of them. It's not so far from the next generation."

That sounds a little like a way of saying it's not far away from being the next WRX, but it's probably not as close as we'd like it to be either.

If the next WRX doesn't get a high-tech hybrid powertrain, it probably needs something pretty dramatic in the styling department, and the Viziv Performance Concept certainly fits that particular bill. — AFP-Relaxnews
